Home Stays

Hey all,
we met our home stay families yesterday and got all settled into our new houses. Our house is lovely, Me and KD sleep in our own room on a nice comfy double bed, a definite relief from the constant of tents every night. There are no creepy jumping bugs in our houses, unlike in our tents haha. I love our family they are so accommodating.

Olivia is our 21 year old sister who took us to her university to sit in on classes today. She is tons of fun, very smart, and has been showing us around town.

Oscar is our father, he loves educating young people and works in crime control in schools. He taught us more about almost everything in one night's dinner conversation from the U.S elections, to racism, to the turmoil inside of South Africa and his opinion on the future. It was so interesting. Oscar also has a wonderful funny side and was great to have with us.

Myrna is our host mother, she is also very loving and makes sure me and K.D are always comfortable. She works in fashion design, and works very hard. She also makes some really amazing pasta! Currently she is helping me learn Afrikaans words for a language assignment.

tomorrow we are visiting a nursery to go teach with a couple of the other girls while our family works and goes to school. Meanwhile me and K.D are enjoying the attention, the food, the comfort of our house, and the company of our family.

Thats all for now,
Love Melissa

It was so good to talk to you today! I'm so happy you got the packages-- I hope you're enjoying some treats-- I just remembered that there were chocolate peeps in there ha ha-- and when the cooking is not up to par at least you can put hot sauce on it ;-) I'm glad you are getting a chance to blog-- just so you know, Dad and I read them over and over hanging on every word. Enjoy the cushy bed and creature comforts. I can't wait to hear more about your service projects next week.
Love, Mom

I wanted to tell you that I have enjoyed reading your blogs. Also, I used your entry from Eshowe in my Health class (Grade 10). I protected your identity because I wasn't sure if you wanted the Johnsburg Students to know...Anyway, I read your blog and had the students react to the entry in their journals. Led to a great period of discussion concerning AIDS, cultural differences, what the disease is doing to the African society, and to our society. Thanks for providing our students with a real life lesson.
Have a great time,
gary

Hi Lissy, It was so exciting to hear from you the other day. I start every conversation with: "I got a phone call from Africa!"

Hadn't left you a comment recently. The home stay sounds absolutely wonderful, a chance to really experience how "your family" lives and get to know them. Not to mention the comforts you get to have for a little while.
Went hiking on one of my favorite trails--Blue Ledges--the other day. Everyone in our group sank in at the muddy spots and yours truly got the muddiest. Moral: Do not wear light colored hiking pants in the Adirondacks. Read the comment from Gary; how great that your experiences are reaching other kids your age at home. You should write something up for the local paper when you get home. Can't wait to see you again. Love, Gmom
